Formation for children

For the religious formation of children from about ages 3 to 8, the Church of the Ascension offers The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Catechesis is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Sophia Cavaletti. Children gather in an “atrium,” a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use. In an atrium a child can ponder a biblical passage or a prayer from the liturgy by taking the material for that text and working with it – placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, setting sculpted apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar with the furnishings used for the Eucharist. Older children who are able to read often copy parables from the Bible, written prayers from the rite of baptism, or label a long time-line showing the history of the kingdom of God. Catechesis meets from September to June every Sunday morning between the two services from about 9:00 to 10:00. The atrium is located at the extreme ends of the classroom wing adjacent to the church. Enrollment is open throughout the year.

Formation for Tweens and Teens

Students in 4th through 12th grades are invited to take part in the Church of the Ascension’s Youth Group program which meets every Sunday morning between the two services from about 9:10 to 10:00 in the back portion of the Parish House, located directly east of the church at 45 Laurel Avenue. The emphasis is on education and formation in the Christian faith and tradition as well as mutual support and encouragement. We draw from various resources for the educational component including the Journey to Adulthood curriculum, Rite 13, and Weaving God’s Promises. Beyond our Sunday morning time, we schedule many other events and projects; past events include: hosting a parish Halloween party, participation in the Pasadena area CROP walk, a baby donation drive for the Angel Interfaith Network, and assisting at the bad weather shelter. Many of our members also play an important role in the worship life of the parish by serving as acolytes at the 10:15 Eucharist. New members are welcome at all times – just drop in and see us!
