Traditions

Traditions help shape who we are and connect us to generations of faith. They are more than something we do—they are ways we worship, serve, celebrate, and grow together as a church family. Here are some of the cherished traditions that continue to bless our church and our community.

Blessing of the Animals

Blessing of the Animals at Ascension is held each year on the Sunday closest to Saint Francis commemoration date. The blessing takes place at the outdoor altar after the 10:15 service. All animals are welcome, and the event is attended by both parishioners and members of the community.

Halloween Candy

Halloween Candy is collected from parishioners the weeks leading up to Halloween. The candy is then given to community members who pass by the church on Halloween.

Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish Meeting is the time for our church community to come together and discuss the past year, elect new leaders, and look at the future. Preceding the meeting, a potluck brunch follows a combined one service.

Dodgers Episcopal Night

Episcopal Night at the Dodgers is a favorite of Ascension Dodger fans.

Gathering of the Saints

Gathering of the Saints occurs on All Saints Sunday. On this date, we gather together at one service to reflect on what Ascension means to us and to launch the Stewardship season.

Grocery Gift Card Drive

During the days leading up to Christmas, Ascension parishioners buy grocery cards for Hillsides families.

Easter Brunch

Easter brunch is held each year between the services.

Shrove Tuesday Supper

Shrove Tuesday Supper occurs every year in the parish hall. Clergy members make the pancakes. The palms from the previous year are burned to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday services.

Lenten Offering

Lenten offering is part of our outreach each year. We have raised money for projects of Episcopal Relief and Development some years and to special needs of Friends in Deed at other times.

Candlelight Walk

The Candlelight Walk is held the Sunday before Christmas. Ascension clergy and parishioners gather with other clergy and community members at St. Rita’s church for prayer, scripture reading, and carol singing as together we join in a candlelight procession down the main street in town.

Holiday Shopping Party

Our Holiday Shopping Party fund raiser is held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The store, Savor the Flavor, donates 10% of what parishioners spend on this occasion when we shop and toast the holiday season together.
